Small Business Article Review - Maslow A Theory of Human Motivation Part Two

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

By Craig Lutz-Priefert Abraham Maslows article on the Hierarchy of Needs is a landmark for the disciplines of psychology and marketing. Small business owners have possibly heard of Maslow in their general reading, but we believe his insights into human nature are vital for any small business selling to human beings. This is the second of two articles on the subject. A brief recap of the 5 needs: The Physiological Needs The Safety Needs The Love Needs The Esteem Needs The Need for Self-Actualization Maslow indicates that most people have only a percentage of these needs filled at a certain time. On page 13, he points out that the average individual is most satisfied in the physiological and safety needs, and least satisfied in the self-actualization needs. Here is a clue to why it is important for us, as Chief Marketer, to do our best. How many of us are in the career we planned to be in? Not many. Yet most of us who wind up in a position at our company where we are trusted with the marketing function possess some creativity. Coupled with this, we have a desire to advance our company, to promote it, to make it better and to make the company more profitable. The problems of the Chief Marketer and the Sole Proprietor are similar. Both need to generate a certain kind of initiative and each must sometimes go-it-alone in the course of growing the business. Both need to be out front, clearing a new path for the rest of the company to follow. Both sometimes feel like they work in isolation, unappreciated. When you start feeling bogged down, look to the last two needs: Esteem Needs and the Need for Self-Actualization. Both can give you a way out and a hand back up. Esteem needs are often met through interaction with our fellows. If you get stuck or feel down, then seek out one of your business mentors or a peer in your company. Ask them to honestly review some of your work. Ask them to tell you where it lacks and where it is positive, then push forward. You can use the achievers in the Bloom Team for this esteem building, too. Youll be surprised how you suddenly dont feel as alone. Earlier we discussed that one key reason Achievers work well for your company is to fulfill an inner needthe need for self-actualization. This is true for you as Chief Marketer, as well. This is where a good Crystal Hour can really help. When we respond to our creativity we are responding to an inner calling; that voice inside that urges us to do our best, to use our creative ability for some good. We suddenly find ourselves re-energized and the road doesnt feel quite as lonely or difficult. Remember: Brand (who you are) + Package (your Face to the Customer) + People (customers and employees) = Marketing Success. An Unseen Beauty

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

By Kenneth C. Hoffman As a young boy, I loved to collect rocks. Stories of lost gold mines, buried jewels and priceless rubies whetted my appetite for rocks. Of course, the pebbles I collected were only pretty stones, smoothed by a distant stream, ending up in my grubby pocket. In my teens, I once visited the Natural History Museum in New York and was fascinated by the gem collection. World’s Largest Crystal Ball, a replica of the Hope Diamond and an opal weighing over one hundred pounds all found their way into my dreams. A few years later I would choose Geology as my college major. In my twenties, while perusing the wares in a Government Surplus Store, I came across a three hundred watt ultraviolet spotlight with its high voltage transformer. Costing only five dollars, it prompted me to ask the owner of what use it could be. He told me that it was used to discover flaws in the manufacture of weapons but other than that, the only other use he could think of was to make visible certain fluorescent materials. I immediately thought of the mineral fluorite that glowed under ultra violet light. So I bought it. A visit to the local library turned up a beautiful book on fluorescent minerals with gorgeous pictures of mineral samples shining in pure rainbow colors under a UV lamp. Most of these rare minerals occurred in mines all over the world but one source of these collectible rocks was located only twenty miles from my house! The next day off found me happily wending my way to the town of Franklin, New Jersey. Seeing a sign near this tiny town advertising The Franklin Museum for Fluorescent Rocks, I screeched to a halt to get directions. I was led to a large Victorian home and greeted at the door by an old man. In his living room were several glass cases filled to the brim with grayish-looking dusty rocks, each one carefully labeled. The collector explained that the colors showed too pale in the daytime but if I would like to see the full effect, I was welcome to see the collection in his cellar. A flight of squeaky wooden steps opened up in a large, low-ceilinged room covered with shelved of the same gray rocks as upstairs. I still wasn’t impressed. Then he turned on the ultraviolet tubes and turned off the regular white light. A fantasy of colors hit my eye. Every tone of orange from peach to tangerine, rich yellows, azure blues and intense reds shouted out from the walls in a melange of lacy patterns. As I crawled along examining each sample, the owner explained where each sample originated, how much it was worth and how rare. My head was spinning with the colorful images revealed by the invisible ultra violet light. I asked him if it were possible to find some specimens myself for my own collection. He told me of several ore tailings of nearby ancient mines that undoubtedly contained many good specimens for a collection, but they were too difficult to separate from the mass of useless rock. Immediately I thought of my powerful UV spotlight and how it would allow me to discover the precious samples with ease. The next weekend, I lugged the spotlight to the old mine and as luck would have it, a small, deserted shack was situated not far from the tailings. An old man came out and I told him of my quest. He understood right away and offered the use of his electricity for me to plug in my fifty foot extension cord. He recommended that I wait until dark to start. Later that night, I returned to the spot with the waiting good Samaritan. A hum filled the air as the spot light warmed up. Then, shining the invisible spotlight on the mountain of gray rock, a myriad of lights glowed like far-flung galaxies in the void of space. Climbing up the steep slope, I chose the brightest and most colorful of samples until I had more than I could carry. Like the hidden talents in ordinary people, my collection never failed to wow our science-inclined visitors at the amazing and eerie light emerging from plain, gray, ordinary-looking rocks. My interests include writing, photography, graphic arts, furniture refinishing and bicycling. Nude Weddings - the Bare Facts

Monday, April 21st, 2008

By Marc Seligman According to the Roper Organization, some 54 million Americans have skinny-dipped with members of the opposite sex. There are over 270 clubs and resorts in the United States catering to nudists and naturists. The Wall Street Journal reported in 2003 that nude recreation in the United States has become a $400 million business. Rustic nudist colonies are a thing of the past, as are the embarrassment that often came with proclaiming oneself a nudist. These days, international travelers see that the world is more than willing to embrace the benefits of nude living and recreation. Many nudists, however, cannot accomplish one of their major life goals in the nude their own wedding. Although many of us wish to get married sans clothing, there are few places that can accommodate our wishes. At least that is what the common belief has been. When my wife and I got married, we wanted to have a nude ceremony. We chose to tie the knot at a resort in Jamaica that had tremendous facilities for nudists. When we arrived at the resort, however, we were told that the ceremony had to take place on the clothed, or textile, part of the resort. Although we were disappointed, many of our friends, wearing no more than towels, joined us as we became man and wife. Fast forward a few years and I find myself living and working in Florida. I also find out that in Florida, notaries can perform wedding ceremonies. I wish I had known that years ago. Now, all of a sudden, things have changed. Would it be possible to find a notary to perform a nude wedding? A nude wedding, performed by a competent, experienced Florida notary public should be extremely affordable. You just have to keep searching until you find one. Nude weddings should cost just $20 for a true nude notary to officiate. Instead of spending $500 to $6000 or more on a dress, the cost of wedding apparel in a nude wedding is $0. If you measure American culture by what we watch on television, you would imagine every woman to be a Bridezilla, spending thousands upon thousands upon thousands of dollars for a dress that will only be worn one time. I suggest that people at least explore the possibility of getting married in the nude. We now know that any Florida notary can perform a wedding. The cost should be just $20. Save your clothing money and spend it on your honeymoon, donate it to Habitat for Humanity or a local food bank, or make a down payment on a house. Join the millions of Americans who have enjoyed nude recreation and make your wedding day one that is meaningful for you. copyright 2006 by Marc Seligman, Ed.D. 3 Tips On Choosing A Lawn Mower

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

By James C Picking a lawnmower seems like an easy task. You just go into the home improvement store and find one that is a good deal right? Well it is not quite so easy. If you have been to a home improvement store lately you have probably seen the dozens of different mowers available. Keep reading and learn three things that you should consider when buying a mower. The first thing you should consider is what size lawn do you have. This will determine what size of mower you need. A small lawn can get by with a small push mower while a larger yard might justify a riding mower. With a medium size lawn you might choose a larger push mower or maybe a self propelled once. If you decide you need a riding mower, do you have a place to store it. They take up a lot of room. The next thing to consider is whether you want to rake clippings, bag them or mulch them. Some cities do not allow for the disposal of lawn clippings in landfills. If this is the case, you will either want to bag and compost them or you will want a mulching mower. Mulching mowers cut the clippings into small pieces that will break down easily in your yard. The last thing you want to consider before you invest in a mower is if you will even use it. If you absolutely hate doing lawn work you might be better off just putting that money towards a lawn service. There is no point in buying a shiny new mower just to let it rust and collect dust in the garage. Hopefully this article has given you some things to consider. Take a moment and think about your decision because once you have made your purchase you are stuck with it for some time. Want To Make An Inexpensive Fish Attracting Lure? Try the CD Flash!

Monday, April 14th, 2008

By Gary Ralston What is free and can also serve as an effective fishing lure? Simple; compact discs (CDs). Whether from AOL, or any other source, a CD comes with at least one highly mirrored surface that easily attracts fish eyes. If you havent noticed already, a CD is flexible, plastic and can easily be cut with a pair of scissors. You can create a shape like a fish, long diamond, triangle,V, or any shape youd like with relative ease. Next, drill a hole at opposite ends of your shape of choice. Use a small file or knife point to smooth any sharp edges around the holes. One hole will be used to attach the leader, the second will be used to tie on either a small treble or single hook. To cast the lure any distance you are going to need to add a quarter to half ounce of weight. The simplest way to do this is to tie a combined swivel and weight to the leader about 18 from the lure. Another option is to just add a small slip sinker to the reel side of the line before tieing on a swivel. The weight will rest against the swivel when the lure is cast or reeled in. Substitute a “CD Flash” on one leg of a double jig and you wont need to worry about adding weight for casting. Or, just slip one of your special designs onto a single lead head, replacing one plastic bait for another. Just make the hole small enough so that the lure is kept from slipping off by the hook barb. CDs are also not only writeable by computer hard drives but also by felt tip pens of all colors. Draw in eyes, scales, colorful stripes, or just leave it natural flash. Many shape variations and rigging techniques are possible. Glue two CDs together and youll have a double sided mirror lure. You might need a pair of heavy duty scissors or tin cutters to do the trimming on the thicker lure. Just experiment until you find what works best for you. No longer will you look at a CD the same way - and neither will the fish! Gary Ralston is publisher of Gulf Coast Fisherman magazine. Discover the Winning Marketing Strategy Secrets of Donald Trump Apprentice Wanna-bes

Friday, April 11th, 2008

By Adam Urbanski The highly entertaining Donald Trumps search for an apprentice turned into a hit reality TV show captured attention of millions of Americans and week after week delivered great insights into leadership, business and marketing savvy. In one of the episodes Trump challenged the two opposing teams of apprentice wannabes (Apex and Mosaic) to put together a bridal gown sale. Each team had to contact vendors, secure inventory, and most importantly, attract qualified prospects to generate the maximum profits. And here is the kicker they had just 24 hours to do it. (For more details see the blow-by-blow outline of this episode.) Mosaic moved very quickly. They 1. Zeroed in on a specific strategy: give other bridal shops opportunity to sell their discontinued designs at drastically discounted prices. 2. Formulated a marketing plan: send 23,000 highly targeted email announcements to brides-to-be for a cost of $1,000 3. Divided and delegated the tasks and got busy implementing their plan. As a result of a clear and attractive offer Mosaic easily attracted local bridal shops eager to get rid of their discontinued lines. Meanwhile Apex jumped right into chasing potential vendors and without a clear and enticing marketing message - endured one rejection after another. Discouraged, they almost gave up before stumbling onto a helpful local bridal shop owner who managed to point them in the right direction. But just as they had no plan to attract vendors to their gown sale, Apex didnt give any thought as to who their target market was and where they could easily and quickly find large groups of prospects. Their marketing strategy of handing out fliers at Grand Central and Penn Station (in New York) was unfocused and unnecessarily tied up team members most precious asset time. The results? Mosaic attracted a city-block-long line or eager-to-buy prospects and generated $12,788.94 in profits in one day! Apex brought in only a handful of buyers and a measly $1,060.47. Wow! By following solid marketing principles Mosaic beat their opponents by generating almost 12 times as much profits as Apex. So what were their marketing secrets? Well, here they are: 1. THINK STRATIGICALLY!Before you get busy peddling make sure your boat is pointed in the right direction. Take time to formulate your strategy and outline a specific action plan and youll save a time, energy and money, and create the desired results a whole lot faster! 2. Focus on a SPECIFIC TARGET MARKET!If you remember nothing else from this article remember this one thing to be successful you must focus your marketing efforts! 3. Find a HIVE OF HUNGRY PROSPECTS! Hundreds of thousands of disinterested passers-by at the Penn Station cant event compare to the power of a targeted email blast to 23,000 brides hunting for the best deal on their wedding gown. To quickly penetrate your niche find centers of influence and large networks of your potential clients and get your message in front of them. 4. Evaluate PRICE vs. COST! One of most damaging marketing mistakes is deciding which promotional tools and media to use based on price alone. Even though Mosaic chose a seemingly pricey promotion, ultimately it proved to be less costly based on the repose and results it created. 5. Profit from CO-OPETITION!If you choose your target market carefully there is more business out there than you can possibly handle. Dont fear your competitors find a way to profit from their business. Well, there you have it. Go back and read these five points several times. Consider for a moment what implementing these ideas might look like in your business. Make these principles the basis of your business and soon you too will be making money out of thin air I guarantee it! (c) 2004 Adam M. Tasks To Consider Before You Shop For A Home Loan

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Carmen_Luna]Carmen Luna Getting a home loan is not an easy task. There are many points to consider even before you approach a lender for a home loan. This would reduce your stress to a considerable amount and would give you the confidence to approach for a home loan. Before you consider a lender for home loan you should decide the type of home that you need for yourself. You could start looking for homes that you like and you have to make a decision on the type of home that you want before you approach a lender or broker. When you look for a home you have to consider the type of loan that would be needed for that home and the budget that you can afford to buy that home. You cant buy a home using a home loan and then starve in that home. You need money for your day to day life. So, consider wisely the payment that you have to make for the home of your choice. It better to list down your priorities on getting a home so that you can easily decide on the type of home you can purchase with a home loan. The location of your home is important. The right kind of neighborhood is also important when you purchase your home and not only your home loan. The distance you need to travel to reach other family members should also be considered. The distance you travel to your office is also important. Before you consider a home loan for that home, you should find out whether there are hospitals, shopping complexes, entertainment centers, and proper transportation near the home of your choice. Other issues like job transfers, the size of the home, starting a family, and the type of area are to be considered when you go for a home loan for the home of your choice. If you are not planning to stay for a long time in that home then you have to look at the resale value for that home. Proximity of the schools should be considered if you are planning to raise your family in that location. If you are starting your family immediately then schools are not a consideration. You lifestyle also decides the type of home and the home loan that you require. If you work from home then you might need a home office which is necessary for you. Another important point to consider while approaching for a home loan is the credit score that you have. A good credit score is necessary to qualify for a home loan. The better the credit score, the more you get out of your home loan. The interest rate would also be better if you have a good credit score. Check your credit report at least once a year and correct the discrepancies if any in it. You can get a credit report from any of the three agencies like Experian, Equifax, and Transunion. If your credit score is not that good, find out the ways to improve your credit score before you approach any lender for home loan. Why Drive Backwards? My One Minute Cure for an 18 Year Problem

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

By Janet Sinclair What was it that wouldn’t let me let go? What invisible threads attached me , stubbornly, to the illogic of hope?Fortunately, I knew little of the statistics surrounding Fellow- (as we Canadians say:) Consumers. Yet I felt the climate change with every mention of the label, “Bi-Polar” and better yet “Post Partum Psychosis.”I felt my way along , crawling through the darkness of misinformation and predjudice.I believed, hoping against hope, that there was a way out of this unexpected, yet long-time-coming Life Sentence.I always knew that I was special. I had intelligence, but no organization. I was kind, but feared friends. I was thin and I felt fat. I was pretty and I felt leprous.I sat on the edge of life, wondering when it would let me in. Crying. Alone. 31 approached. Old enough, I thought to be considered “mature”, yet without an asset to my name. My wealth lay in the lessons learned stubbornly forging forward, blind.Self-pity was a constant temptation. Some days, I gave in.”God, you have left me and I am poor and stupid and ugly and fat, all my 105 pounds!” I raged, when I felt the energy between cigarettes. I would give in. I would admit defeat to the giant of the Proven and give up the fruitless fight of cutting my own swath to success. In Alberta, it’s called AISH. Globally, it might be termed social welfare. I knew it’s real name: “Eternal Dependence for the Chronically Special.” “Visualization Helps!” a web site read, and my desperation was momentarily distracted. So what? I’ve tried it a thousand times! Think happy thoughts, imagine beautiful places- kiss my- all you fairy-headed optimists. Pick on someone in your own social paradigm.Like a hundred times before, a feeling of understanding descended to quell the rising desperation and lift the heaviness of unknowingness. “Energy flows where attention goes.” The mantra of a wise friend opportunely echoed through the space in my head. A memory flitted by , of driving down a snowy hill in Edmonton, Alberta. I was terrified to acknowledge that the probability of smacking head on into the cars opposite me, three inches away, was great. My babies were in the back. I felt intrinsically that if I focused on that fear, I would hit a car. If I kept my eyes on the road ahead, I would most likely be safe. Relieved at our safe arrival on the river-bottom roads, I soaked up the reward of new knowing : Focus on what you want, and forget about what you don’t want. Ideally ,ignore the fear, and make the desicion to look toward where you can or must go.What, was I 25 then? Young and idealistic?31 seemed so much heavier. “Visualization Helps!” I was a drowning woman, and this was the only rope I could see. Dammit. I tried. Now,I know that seeing life as you would have it be, is an important key to freedom. I’m light, not heavy inside. The space in my head is being filled with education and praise, not fear and doubt.I still don’t have the hang picturing what I want, so I do what I do best and feel it. Deeply and sincerely and with longing , I will life to deliver the Rose Garden. It is.My epiphany is this: I have been driving, looking backward! God hadn’t left me. I just couldn’t see him because my neck was craned so far, mesmerized by the car wrecks in my life. Divorce, mental illness, poverty, homelessness, rape.”So what?” I now say to them all. What can one moment’s looking back bring today?I made a choice. All it took was one minute. With three diagnosis, three kids, little education and no savings, I chose to reject depression. I chose to embrace the fairy-land of what-if’s. I chose to be grateful for everything. Did you ever hear the true story of a woman in a concentration camp who thanked God even for the fleas? Crazy? Her dubious companions learned later that it was because of the fleas that the guards had stayed out of their bunker. What little belongings, they had been able to smuggle in , which gave great comfort, were never discovered. I will be grateful when it is so cold I have to shower to thaw out. I will be thankful when my child is having a tantrum, and I might even laugh instead of crying. I will thank God for every night my new husband comes home late, because I know (unlike the last) that he really was working late. I will ignore doubt and worry and despair, who are so familiar, but not my friends. I will accept the invitation to join the world, and soak in the ability to make mistakes without beating myself up. Friends will stand by me. I will cut loose the misplaced shame of the past, laugh at the labels and the darkness will flee. It is.I will still be special- I will always be unique. I will be a light shining to illuminate ignorance, and forgive for what still hurts. A life of struggle and the overcoming of it’s pitfalls has built muscles I always wanted to have…the same ones I coveted in the Greats, who must have lacked definition, as I , in the beginning. Thank-you, Nellie McClung, you taught me at 12, a woman can do anything. Thank you, Madela, you taught me at 15, nothing is impossible. Thank you, Ghandi, you taught me that brains can go along with heart, and that death is not the worst fate. Little voices don’t talk to me (they never did) , but feelings come and go. Now they are less high or low, they are intuitive and guiding, like a compass that points the way to everything good.Wow! Do I deserve this? Absolutely not. Am I going to get on the wave and ride anyway? Until I make it. Do you have a minute? Dating Advice: What You Have That Paris Hilton Doesn’t

Saturday, April 5th, 2008

By Terry Hernon MacDonald My husband and I and another couple recently hit a neighorhood hotspot. The place positively swelled with beautiful people sipping the night away in summer clothes. Eventually, our conversation turned to Paris Hilton. “She’s very pretty,” our male friend remarked. “But she doesn’t do anything for me.” After having witnessed NBC anchor Matt Lauer get into a lather over the hotel heiress’ hamburger commercial (the one where she cavorts in teensy shorts with a gushing spray hose), I needed to know why Paris left this particular guy cold. “Because she doesn’t really smile. I don’t even know if she even has the ability. She sneers. You know, I went to high school with a girl like that, a very pretty girl. Some guys were really into her, but she just didn’t do it for me. They’d tell me I was crazy, and I’d tell them I’d rather date someone who knew how to smile.” This intrigued me. I knew this guy when he was in high school. I remember being in his parents’ house, and the phone ringing constantly. The person on the other line tended to be female and wanted to talk to him. He could date any girl he wanted. “So, you’re telling me that looks don’t matter?” “Looks are great. A good figure is great. But an overweight woman who knows how to smile and likes to laugh is a lot sexier than a so-called beautiful woman who doesn’t.” This man’s proclamation no doubt contradicts all the advice you’ve gleaned from women’s magazines over the years, but think about it. It makes sense. After all, what kind of guy do you go for? Is he robotically handsome like a soap star, or is he a real-life human being who likes a good laugh, who looks you in the eye and smiles? Matt Lauer aside, guys aren’t that different. A lot of them want the same things you want. So many of us obsess over the size of our noses or the tube of fat that hangs over our jeans, but here’s the bottom line: It doesn’t matter. You don’t have to put a plastic surgeon’s kid through Yale to get a guy. You don’t have to dress up in little shorts and dance around with a spray hose, either. Get over yourself. Smile easily. Laugh often but genuinely. You’ll get a guy who doesn’t need to date women who look like Paris Hilton. You’ll get a great guy who wants to date a woman like you.
